Cheese and hard drugs have a similar effect on the brain, according to a new study.

The chemical casein is present in both cheese and many hard drugs. It causes dependence, researchers say.

Casein is present in all dairy products (looking at you, ice cream), and can trigger the brain's opioid receptors which are linked to addiction, says a new report by the Independent.

Processed foods were more associated with addictive behavior. Fatty foods are the hardest for people to quit, says the study.

Registered dietitian Cameron Wells told Tech Times, "[Casomorphins] really play with the dopamine receptors and trigger that addictive element."
