Chris Cornell Wrote Music to a Johnny Cash Poem, Recorded It

Chris Cornell was one of several notable rock and country singers who last year wrote music to and recorded old Johnny Cash poems as songs.

The project, Johnny Cash Forever Words: The Music, was produced by Cash's son, John Carter Cash, who also released a book of his father's poems.

This latest revelation came from country star Jamey Johnson, who also worked on the project.

"John Carter has a good number of poems that Johnny wrote. I say poems because they don’t have music to them,” Johnson told Kentucky Country Music. “He’s working on an album where he’s pairing up these songs with songwriters from our day to finish up these Johnny Cash songs.

"One of them that I know he’s most proud of and you can’t get it anymore – he’s got Chris Cornell having finished one of these songs and then recorded it. I’m excited for it to come out. I got to do a couple of them.”

The album also includes contributions from Brad Paisley, Jewel, T-Bone Burnett and others.

Loudwire notes that there was mutual admiration between Cash and Cornell; in 1996 Cash released a version of Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage," which was first released in 1991.

There's no release date yet for the album.
